Duality

With a great interest in human psychology in the digital era, I explore the juxtaposition of man-made and nature through the medium of textiles. Using soft materials, I strive to portray warmth and vitality that are often disregarded in the technology revolution. As I constantly ponder about living a purposeful life beyond numbers, I unravel my search for identity in this generation.

Through my art practice, I aim to deliver the essence of life to the modern-day people whose lives have been inevitably intertwined with the virtual world.

Duality

Humans are inevitably contradictory beings for we are constantly changing or adapting. Therefore, duality must exist in all of us.

The concept of “duality” is perceived to be negative by some, but it cannot be neglected since no one is able to avoid conflict in their feelings, principles, and beliefs. Just as life does not come with definite answers, we all most certainly experience duality.

I, too, find myself to be dualistic at times. Through the exhibition ‘Duality’, which will be displayed in the most international neighborhood of Seoul, Itaewon, I explored my cultural duality within. I chose flower as the motif for this installation, for it is a universal symbol of beauty, yet embraces multiple facades in its process of blooming.

In this work, the main flower emblems are taken directly from traditional Korean patterns. These precise motifs portray affection and origin particular to Korea and the tenacity inherited by its people are highlighted using bold and intense colors. Furthermore, the leaves attached to each flower are inspired by exotic tropical plants, commonly found in the Western parts of the world. The organic shapes and textures of the leaves manifest freedom of expression and openness that is accustomed to the influence of America. I strived to create harmony within the opposing contrast between the flowers and the leaves, so the ‘duality’ can exist amicably.

This exhibition speaks the narrative of accepting my own duality and continuously seeking for balance between the two worlds. The metaphor of infinitely beautiful flowers represents my endless conflict with duality that eventually comes together as a new unified self that embodies dualism

I hope that ‘Duality’, which you will encounter on Gyeongnidan-gil, where various cultures gather and coexist, can offer an experience to ponder on various aspects of self.
